PENICUIK's turner prize & annual exhibition
The exhibition is on display at West Street from the 1st until the 15th of September. Judging took place on the opening day and we're happy to announce the winner:
AKI ROGERS with BROKEN HEART This abstract piece caught our judge's eye straight away although he had a hard time choosing between it and the many excellent entries. Several pieces were noted such as Jenni Thompson's monochrome nude, John Rogers leaping salmon and Jim MacDonald's (from the Three Fishes Gallery, Peebles) watercolour portraits of Jimmy Saville and Frank Zappa. We are looking for more volunteers to sit the exhibition during cafe opening hours (1000-1600) so if you can spare a morning or afternoon please let us know (the rota table is in Room 1 at West St). Works should be collected from West St on Sunday the 16th September between 3.30pm-4.30pm or Monday 17th from 6-7 pm. |
NEW THIS YEAR you can also enter for the:
JAMES CHRISTIE PHOTOGRAPHY AWARD
James is a professional photographer who has been published in every national broadsheet newspaper in the UK and internationally, such as NY Times, LA Times, Chicago Tribune, Washington Post as well as other publications and media. He owns and operates the highly successful “Edinburgh Photography Tours Limited” where he takes people on a walking tour around the city, instructing them on how to get the best out of their camera - it’s the number one tour in Scotland as well as Edinburgh on TripAdvisor! http://www.jameschristiephotography.com/
He moved from the city to Penicuik last year and joined the PCAA committee after helping out in last year’s festival. The beauty of the landscape, history and architecture of the area has stimulated his creative spirit and so this new photography exhibition will be launched this year to encourage others to get out there and capture their own images of the area. It was felt that although a photographer has won the Turner Prize in the past, photography is sometimes overlooked in the annual exhibition so this specialised but accessible and popular art form deserves its own showcase.
The exhibition opens on Monday 3rd September but it is still open for entries. If you'd like to join the competition please contact us on [email protected]
The subject can be of anything related to Penicuik and the surrounding area, not just landscapes but people, objects, interesting angles or views - get creative. Any size up to A0 will be accepted but it must be framed with a hanger suitable for our hooks and rods. A £2 per entry donation to the PCAA is requested (maximum of 3 with 3 for 2 for members). Entries will be hung in the Gallery Cafe at West St during the whole of September and judging will take place on Sunday the 23rd of September and the winner will be presented with the trophy on Sunday, September 30th. We will also ask cafe customers to vote for their favourite and at the end of the month the owner of the most popular image will be given the opportunity to have it permanently displayed at West Street along with the trophy winner.
