KIDS POETRY with chas stramash (aka colin galbraith)
Free workshop at the West St Arts Centre, 3-4 pm, Saturday 15th
Suitable age: 7 - 12, Number in group: 6 - 8
Chas will introduce himself then get to know the kids: who is who - what they all like to do - their favourite things - name badges.
We'll read a couple of poems from Silly Poems for Wee People then have a game where the kids are asked to think about something they like; their favourite thing in the world. It can be anything (toy, food, person, animal, etc.) - and they are asked to write about it on a piece of paper, describing what it looks like, smells like, tastes like, sounds like, feels like, etc. The aim is to be able to describe their favourite thing without mentioning it. Volunteers can then read out their poems while the others try to guess what it is.
- there is no pressure to be a good speller
- neatness and good handwriting is not what this exercise is about
- does not need to rhyme
- only the descriptions matter
Lessons for the kids:
- only what is in the child’s mind matters
- nobody is wrong (1000 poets writing about an apple will get 1000 different poems)
- everyone is unique and has their own view of the world
- everyone is equal
In another game the kids are asked to partner off. If there’s an odd number Chas will be someone’s partner. Person A writes down an “IF” or “WHEN” statement. Ex: “If a pig fell out of the sky” or “When a bird chirps” Person A does NOT tell Person B. …meanwhile…
Person B thinks of a “THEN” statement. Ex: “then all the leaves will fall” or “then I’ll have to wash the dishes” Person B does NOT tell Person A yet. After doing this a few times, the kids will read out their poems together, with person A reading the first line, and Person B reading their line.
The results are always very funny.
“If a pig fell out of the sky
then all the leaves will fall”
“When a bird chirps
then I’ll have to wash the dishes”
- being silly is all that matters
Lessons:
- the joy is in the audaciousness of surprising and unexpected connections
We'll finish off by reading a few more poems from Silly Poems for Wee People and handing out
some goodies.
